Summer Coffee Recipes: Iced Coffee with Golden Syrup (#1)
My Recipe Inspiration:
As summer is upon us, my husband has begun to transition from hot coffee (after work) to iced coffee. I have made iced coffee many times before, but after my recent flapjack post, I still had my golden syrup jar on the kitchen countertop. The idea dawned on me. Why not try the golden syrup in my iced coffee?
I also thought it would be fun to make some chocolate covered coffee beans as a garnish. Afterall, a bit of extra-special, sweetness never goes amiss in a dessert recipe. This recipe actually reminds me of the long strolls my husband and I took to coffee shops, and tea rooms in England, when we were newlyweds. (In fact, I can almost feel the damp breeze on my cheeks and smell the aroma of roasting coffee now.)
For a fun touch, I also used silicon molds to pour coffee into to create some adorable, frozen coffee flowers.
I hope you all enjoy my summer coffee recipes: iced coffee with golden syrup (homemade whipped cream, frozen coffee flower), and my double chocolate coffee beans.
May it give you energy and keep you cool this summer!
Iced Coffee with Golden Syrup Recipe:

Iced Coffee with Golden Syrup
Ingredients
- 7 tbsp Coffee (Scoops of your favorite good quality coffee)
- 4 cups Boiling Water (If you are using a French press- make coffee as you normally would.)
- ½ cup Heavy Whipping Cream
- ½ cup Half and Half
- ¼ cup Turbinado Sugar
- ¼ cup Golden Syrup Store bought- or you can make your own: see my golden syrup recipe.
- Splash of Vanilla
Method
- Brew coffee in a Friench Press (7 Tablespoons coffee and 4 cups boiling water). Allow to sit for approximately five minutes.
- Add brewed coffee to a heat safe container. Add the sugar and the golden syrup. Stir to combine.
- Add the half & half and the heavy whipping cream and stir.
- Allow the coffee to completely cool in the refrigerator (approximately 2 hours or until completely cold.)
- Stir again before serving as the sugars and syrup can sink to the bottom. If desired serve with whipped cream on top. Garnish with double chocolate coffee beans.
Notes
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Add cream to medium-large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer (or by hand), whip the cream until lush and thick.
- Add the vanilla and powdered sugar to the cream and continue to whip until desired consistency is reached (approximately 2-3 minutes.)
Frequently Asked Questions on Ice Coffee with Golden Syrup:
1. Can I use instant coffee in place of brewed coffee?
Yes, you can. However, in my experience, I have found that strongly brewed coffee (a high ratio of coffee to water) gives this recipe a warm depth that instant coffee lacks. Obviously, this is a personal opinion- so feel free to experiment with your favorite instant coffee if you would like.
2. Do I have to use the cream and half & half... or can I opt for a lighter version- using only milk?
You do not have to use the cream and half and half if you prefer not to. Using milk will also produce a creamy drink. I personally prefer the taste of the fat in this recipe- thus, using the cream. Again, you can feel free to experiment with milk to suit your individual preferences and needs. You could also experiment with other milk alternatives to see if you like that flavor combination.
3. Can I use honey in place of the golden syrup?
You can experiment with honey as well. Personally, I do not love honey in my coffee (as I much prefer it in my tea). Golden syrup adds an almost toffee like flavor- which adds warmth and depth to the iced coffee. If you cannot find any golden syrup to purchase in America, you can make my recipe by following this link or you can simply add more sugar to sweeten in the same manner. (I do recommend that you try golden syrup as it is a delightful ingredient!)
How to Garnish an Iced Coffee:
Most people would agree that coffee is a delightful treat on its own accord. However, garnishing a coffee takes it to the next level.
A garnish is an extra tid-bit that adds something special- while also making something look lovely. Just as I enjoy decorating my home, I enjoy decorating my food and drink as well. Afterall, presentation is important when serving food as we typically eat with our eyes first.
I decorated my iced coffee with golden syrup in three ways really- the whipped cream, the iced coffee flower, and with the double chocolate coffee beans. A little extra packs a big presentation punch.
An Extra Touch: a Decorative Coffee Ice Cube
Extra touches are fun! This idea is so simple! All you need is a silicon food grade mold and some leftover coffee. I will teach you my steps below:
- Pour leftover coffee into a food safe silicon mold of your choosing.
- Next, place the filled mold in the freezer- until the coffee ice cube is completely frozen.
- Lastly, add the adorable ice flower to the top of your iced coffee and whipped cream.
Wa-la a show stopping detail that will leave everyone asking what that adorable, iced flower is. A sure way to impress your guests that anyone can do!
Just be sure to serve immediately as the coffee flower will not stay frozen for long… especially on a hot summer’s day!
Summer Coffee Recipe #2: Double Chocolate Coffee Beans
Now that our iced coffee is made and chilling in the refrigerator, let us turn our attention to the double chocolate coffee beans.
Double chocolate coffee beans are a real treat. Have you ever tried them?
In fact, these little treats are so good that I like to eat them on their own. Equally, they serve as a delicious garnish for the top of an iced coffee. Plus, this recipe is so simple that little preparation or time is involved.
Double Chocolate Coffee Beans Recipe:

Double Chocolate Coffee Beans
Method
- In a medium mixing bowl (microwave safe), melt half of the chocolate chips (⅓ cup). Melting in 30 second increments so as not to burn the chocolate. Stir and set aside.
- Drop 1 tablespoon of coffee beans into the melted chocolate and coat.
- Using a fork, separate individual coffee beans and singly place on a piece of parchment paper to dry.
- Allow 30 minutes to cool.
- Melt the second half of the chocolate (⅓ cup) and repeat the above steps- giving the coffee beans a second coating of chocolate.
- Enjoy as a garnish for my iced coffee with golden syrup or as a caffeinated afternoon snack.
Notes
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Add cream to medium large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer (or by hand) whip the cream until lush and thick.
- Add the vanilla and powdered sugar to the cream and continue to whip until desired consistency is reached (approximately 2-3 minutes).

Frequently Asked Questions on Double Chocolate Coffee Beans:
1. Can I melt the chocolate in a double boiler as opposed to the microwave?
Yes, in fact a double boiler is often the preferred method when melting chocolate. However, it does take a wee bit more time. If you choose to microwave the chocolate just make sure to do so in 30 second intervals, stirring in between. Melted chocolate is divine… but burnt chocolate is disgusting.
2. How do I make a double boiler?
Place a heatproof glass bowl (or a metal bowl) over a saucepan of simmering water. You will want to add about an inch of water to the saucepan. Making sure that the glass bowl is not actually touching the simmering water. Add the chocolate to the heatproof bowl and stir until melted. The heat from the boiling water gently warms the bowl and melts the chocolate in a lovely smooth way.
3. Do I have to use milk chocolate in this recipe, or can I supplement other chocolate types?
You can try any chocolate you like. I prefer milk chocolate or dark chocolate, but you could also try semi-sweet or white chocolate.
4. Do I have to use organic coffee beans for this recipe?
No. However, I prefer to use organic coffee beans (if I can) as you are actually consuming the whole coffee bean. Choose your favorite coffee bean and stick with that.
